Hard Space

One often does not want to break up a set of words that go together when an end of line is encountered, for example in a surname that is composed of two or more parts (e.g “Ó Murchú”, “Mac Pháidín”). The good news is that it is possible to force the computer to do this, and it is very easy. What you need is a Hard Space.

This is how you create it:

In Microsoft Word and in LibreOffice/OpenOffice.org Writer:

Press CNTL and SHIFT together, and then press the SPACE bar.

Note that OpenOffice.org Writer displays the Hard Space on a shaded background (on screen only), indicating to the user that the command has been acknowledged. With Word, this is not clearly highlighted.
